What We Do
Providing you with your end-to-end harvesting process, we take care of consultation, access management, harvesting, transport and logistics, land regeneration and more.
Forestry is New Zealand’s third-largest export industry
Quality is important to us, the importer and of course the landowner. This is why our team goes through a rigorous consultation process; starting with a quality check, surveying, quoting and health & safety planning. The forest assessment will evaluate the location, quality, the land area, the access to the land and the topography. After the FDL team has assessed the land and stock they will present the landowner with a contract to undergo the work which will hold an offer that will include end-to-end logistics including roading costs.
FDL will work with landowners to design an optimum roading plan to work in with the harvest plan that has been set. From when the plan has been set, we will engage with the earthworks contractor to undertake cutting in access points and roading to the level that is required as per the regional council regulatory requirements.
Harvesting is more than cutting down trees and this is why we contract the leading harvesting contractors that harvest the trees and then process them to the agreed grading mix. The harvesting contractors are also responsible for loading the grades ready for distribution which includes documentation control.
Transport & Logistics - Harvest Site to Port
Because of our end-to-end process, we manage all of the logistics to get the landowners harvested wood to the port. This means we engage our transport company to move the logs to ports across the country. We also ensure that all of the wood waste is removed and available at processing facilities. Beyond the transportation, we are engaging our log marshalling company whom measure & consolidate volume at the wharf and load and consign the shipment.
At FDL we have an ongoing focus to regenerate the land that we harvest from. When the land is ready to be regenerated, our team will engage with our earthworks contractor to undertake land preparation for the replanting process which is undertaken by our silviculture contractor.
After the harvesting process has been completed our team will consult with the landowner and share our carbon management procedures. When it comes to the fast-changing regulations and rules of Carbon Management, our team works within the existing management systems and supports woodlot owners all the way from harvest to replantation and beyond. Every lot is unique and therefore needs individual processes. Therefore we are giving advice and support for carbon management on a case by case bases.
