About Us

FDL is a truly independent forest procurement company without the conflicts of interest and overheads associated with the corporate forest companies and domestic processing plant owners. The company is managed on a day to day basis by its executive directors and shareholders who are all hands-on in the business. All decisions are made in the best interests of both the forest owners and the market to provide the best possible supply criteria and net return while maintaining high levels of forest stewardship. 

We manage complete marketing and sales, procurement, supply chain management, logistics, harvesting, roading and land preparation, cartage, as well as port material handling/stevedoring operations and more.

With our small but very experienced team, we are operating on a significant scale while remaining sufficiently agile to effectively manage the highly dynamic business environment that we operate in.


Our Story

FDL was founded due to the need for a more efficient and transparent forestry sales and procurement service. The need for a full-service business in the forestry sector will increase even more when private wood plantations become ready for harvest in the next few years. Founder Malcolm Burns has had in-depth experience in the industry for the last 27 years and he supports FDL’s clients every step of the way. Over the years, he has forged strong connections and networks within the logistics, shipping and forestry industries.

Our main goal as a company is to influence and change the current market to ensure higher rates of return for our customers and provide more transparency for private woodlot owners. FDL has an opportunity to forge a significant position within the New Zealand forestry landscape, through developing a unique business model which has maximised returns on investment from the integrated supply chain structure as its main aim.

This attitude and commitment to the New Zealand forestry industry is not only an indicator of the attitude and approach of FDL’s business style but also a pointer to the concentrated focus on achieving strong growth whilst ensuring customer satisfaction.
